     ( This DVD chronicles, in pictures and video, the building of the Vietnamese “sewn-plank” boat, one of the most unique forms of ancient boat construction. The sewn plank boat was built in several provinces of central Vietnam for 1,000 years or more until about 30 year ago when its fragile construction gave way to more practical types of wood joinery. The boat is no longer built so you will see the only one of its type in existence.)

These boat models are of woven bamboo hull boats made with sails until a few years ago and are now made similarly but with engine-power. The models come with color pictures of the rigging and comes with a nice wood stand. The sails and rigging are de-installed for shipping.  You can see examples of this type of boat in the Boat Picture Albums section under woven bamboo boats.

 

 

Buy a copy of "Sailboats of Indochina", the preface written and signed by the President of the  Vietnam Wooden Boat Foundation. This is the only available English translation of J.B.
