List of Volunteers Needed for
Projects and Items Needed To Help Achieve the
Foundation Goals
You can help the foundation achieve it goals by contributing
funding or volunteering. These projects can be done from anywhere and would provide
enjoyment for those volunteering.
Volunteers to Travel With Other Foundation Members to Vietnam
to Document Wooden boat building. Volunteer travelers will each pay their
own trip costs. We expect the trips would be exciting and rewarding.
Foundation members will receive the
first invitations to book the trip when firm dates are announced (see Membership
details ).
Projects which need volunteer help or
funding:
Produce detail plans/drawings for
selected Vietnamese wooden boat types from photos.
The intent is then to make scale models which can be produced in
Vietnam and used for display, for education, and to sell to
collectors to raise monies for the foundation.
Produce one or more scale model of
each type from drawings produced from paragraph 1.
The entity in Vietnam which will “mass produce” the
models will need a sample to work from. They would unlikely be
unable to work directly from western-style boat drawings. Once they
develop their own templates/jigs they can reproduce to high
standards using their own methods.
Translate
materials from foreign languages to English. Currently
we have one major book in French, Voiliers d'Indochine
by J. B. Pietri. Saigon, 1943, which has been translated into English
so that it may be studied more widely. This
book is considered the classic book on traditional Vietnamese (and other Indochinese country's)
coastal craft. We also hope there are Vietnamese language
books/articles which we can obtain that will add to our information
base. Volunteer translators would be welcome or funding to
accomplish this would be welcome as well. Another important book to
translate into English is "Bois et Bateux du Vietnam" (Wood and Boats
from Vietnam) by Francoise Aubaile-Sallenave published in 1987.
Materials/items needed by the Foundation to
promote/achieve the foundation goals (or funding to achieve the
same):
An original printing copy of "Junk Blue Book - A
Handbook of Junks of South Vietnam" published by the Advanced Research
Projects Agency (A.R.P.A.) 1962.
Books/other written media or audio/visual media
on Vietnamese/Indochinese/Chinese traditional boats/junks.
The foundation has a number of books on these subjects. Extra copies
allow others to borrow/research.
Pictures or engravings of traditional
Vietnamese boats to display on website and at the foundations'
displays.
